Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Kittens For Home special?

Kittens For Home is a small, home-based cattery raising four celebrated breeds: Persian (longhair), Persian, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, and Bengal. Every kitten is born and raised inside our home — never in a cage or commercial facility — and receives daily handling, enrichment, and attentive care from birth. All of our breeding cats are CFA-registered (TICA for Bengals) and pass breed-appropriate genetic health panels before entering our program. We ship nationwide and remain a lifelong resource for every family who adopts from us.

What breeds do you raise?

We raise four breeds. Persian (longhair) and Persian are both CFA-recognized flat-faced breeds — calm, quiet, and devoted lap cats. The Persian shares the Persian's round look and gentle temperament but carries a short plush coat. Maine Coon is a large, semi-longhaired CFA breed known as the 'gentle giant' — tufted ears, bushy tails, dog-like loyalty. Ragdoll is a CFA breed famous for going limp when held; silky colorpoint coat, blue eyes, famously docile. Bengal is a TICA-registered athletic breed with a wild rosetted or spotted coat, high intelligence, and boundless energy. Prices range from approximately $550 to $700 depending on breed, color, gender, and coat pattern.

How much grooming does each breed need?

Grooming requirements vary significantly across our four breeds. Persian longhairs need daily brushing with a wide-tooth comb and slicker brush to prevent mats — skip even a few days and tangles form. Many owners add a professional lion cut every few months. Persians are much lower maintenance: a weekly brush handles their plush short coat. Maine Coons need brushing two to three times per week to keep their semi-long, layered coat tangle-free, paying extra attention to the ruff, chest, and belly. Ragdolls have a silky semi-long coat that resists matting better than a Persian's; brushing two to three times per week is usually sufficient. Bengals have a short, low-shedding coat that needs almost no brushing — a rubber grooming mitt once a week keeps it gleaming. Regardless of breed, all cats need regular nail trims every two to three weeks. Persians and Persians also require gentle daily cleaning of the eye area to remove tear-staining caused by their flat brachycephalic faces. We send every kitten home with a breed-specific care guide.

Are these breeds good with families and children?

All four breeds are well-suited to family life, though their personalities differ. Persians and Persians are the quietest and most sedate — patient and gentle with respectful children and calm households. Maine Coons are playful, sociable, and confident; they get along famously with kids, dogs, and other cats and will actively seek out interaction. Ragdolls are exceptionally docile and tolerant, making them one of the most family-friendly breeds — they are rarely reactive and adapt quickly to new people. Bengals are the most energetic of the four and thrive in households that can match their pace with interactive play, puzzle feeders, and enrichment. Early socialization — which we begin from the first week of life — ensures that kittens of every breed arrive confident and comfortable being handled.

Are they indoor-only cats?

Yes — we strongly recommend keeping all four breeds indoors at all times. Persians and Persians are particularly vulnerable outdoors due to their trusting natures and brachycephalic sensitivity to heat and cold. Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and Bengals are adaptable and curious enough that the outdoors poses real risks — traffic, predators, and disease — that far outweigh the benefits. An enriched indoor environment with tall cat trees, window perches, and regular interactive play keeps every breed happy and healthy. Bengals especially benefit from leash walks or a secure catio if outdoor stimulation is desired.

What is the temperament of a Bengal compared to a Ragdoll?

These two breeds are nearly opposites in energy, which is why we match families carefully. Ragdolls are famously relaxed — they go limp when picked up, enjoy being held for long periods, and are content to nap in a sunny spot for hours. They are gentle, quiet, and bond deeply with their people without being demanding. Bengals are the most active and mentally engaged cats we raise. They climb, explore, vocalise, and need daily interactive play and mental stimulation to stay content. A Bengal left under-stimulated can become mischievous. Both breeds are deeply affectionate, but a Bengal shows that affection by following you everywhere and asking you to play, while a Ragdoll shows it by flopping contentedly in your lap.

How big do Maine Coons get?

Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed recognised by the CFA. Males typically reach 15 to 25 pounds at full maturity and do not finish growing until they are three to five years old. Females are smaller, usually 10 to 15 pounds. Despite their imposing size, they have a gentle, playful disposition — earning the nickname 'gentle giant.' Their large semi-longhaired coat, prominent ear tufts, and full ruff make them appear even bigger. Plan for a cat-tree rated for a large cat, a wide litter box, and a generous food budget.

What special care do Persian cats need?

Both breeds are brachycephalic — their flat facial structure requires a few daily care habits that longhaired or short-faced owners may not be used to. First, gentle eye cleaning: their large, protruding eyes tear more than other breeds, so a once-daily wipe with a damp cloth removes tear staining and keeps the skin folds healthy. Second, Persians need daily coat brushing; Exotics need weekly brushing. Third, dental attention — their compressed jaw structure can lead to crowded or misaligned teeth, so regular brushing and annual dental checks are recommended. Fourth, keep litter boxes very clean, as their sensitive flat noses make them more averse to odor than other cats. With these habits in place, Persians and Persians thrive as low-key, deeply affectionate companions.

What litter-box habits should I expect?

All four breeds are fastidious and reliably litter-trained before they go home. The most important factor is a clean box — scooped at least once daily. Persians and Persians are especially sensitive to dust and scent, so we recommend low-dust unscented litter for them. Maine Coons and Ragdolls benefit from a larger, higher-sided box that accommodates their size comfortably. Bengals are clean but can be particular — consistency in litter type and box location helps them settle in quickly. We start litter-box training well before kittens leave, so they arrive already accustomed to the routine.

Are your kittens CFA or TICA registered?

Our Persian, Maine Coon, and Ragdoll kittens are registered with the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), the world's largest pedigree cat registry. Our Bengal kittens are registered with The International Cat Association (TICA), which is the primary registry for Bengals and recognises their domestic-hybrid lineage. Both registries require breeders to adhere to established breed standards. Registration papers are included with every kitten, and parents' pedigrees are available for review.

What health testing do you do on your breeding cats?

Health testing is breed-specific at Kittens For Home. Persian parents are DNA-tested for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) — only PKD-negative cats breed — and receive regular cardiac echocardiograms for HCM. Maine Coon parents are echocardiographed for HCM, radiographically evaluated for hip dysplasia (HD), and DNA-tested to confirm SMA-clear status. Ragdoll parents receive annual cardiac echocardiograms for HCM. Bengal parents are DNA-tested for PRA-b (progressive retinal atrophy), PK deficiency, and echocardiographed for HCM. All records are available upon request.

What does the health guarantee cover?

Our written health guarantee covers genetic conditions relevant to each breed — including PKD and HCM for Persians and Exotics; HCM, HD, and SMA for Maine Coons; HCM for Ragdolls; and PRA-b, PK deficiency, and HCM for Bengals — within the guarantee window. We also provide a communicable-disease protection period from the date you receive your kitten. Full details are provided in writing with every placement. We believe transparency is essential — you should know exactly what is covered before you commit.

What is included in the kitten price?

Every Kittens For Home kitten comes with CFA registration papers (TICA for Bengals), age-appropriate FVRCP vaccinations, deworming documentation, a veterinary health certificate, microchip registration, our written health guarantee, and a kitten starter kit. Prices range from approximately $550 to $700. There are no hidden fees.

Do you ship kittens?

Yes — we ship nationwide. Our kittens travel in-cabin with a professional pet nanny (never in cargo) so they arrive calm and well-cared-for. We provide real-time updates throughout the journey. Shipping fees vary depending on your location and the delivery method selected. Contact us at info@kittensforhome.com or call (614) 370-6038 for current availability and shipping details.

How do I reserve a kitten?

Start by reaching out through our contact page or calling (614) 370-6038 so we can learn about your family, lifestyle, and which breed interests you. We'll help you confirm the right fit — a Ragdoll for a calm apartment, a Bengal for an active enrichment-first home, a Maine Coon for a family with kids, or a Persian for someone who wants the ultimate lap cat. Once matched, a deposit secures your reservation. We'll keep you updated with photos and milestone updates until your kitten is ready — typically 12 to 16 weeks of age when they are fully weaned, vaccinated, and socialized.
